about

The 140's are a deliciously international era for Bodycocktail with tours, songs and collaborations outside the comfort of America and the English language. I was playing more countries than ever as witness the cover photo of me leaping over the fjords above the Arctic Circle in Bodø, Norway the city where I met my drummer Skjit-Lars.

I was soon to tour Italy, France and Belgium with my long time home taping friend David Chazam and in preparation did a series of songs in French. While hunting for my French poet to use as a lyrical source I believe my friend Christophe Petchantz was the one to recommend the old and crustiest legend of the the French language François Villon.

Fortunately this is an ancient form of French that's universally incomprehensible so it's hard to get complaints about my pronunciation from French people. I found the French genuinely glad for me to bring their attention back to François Villon than they were offended by my distortion of their beautiful mother tongue.

The cheesiest keyboard with it's horrible preset rhythms was my deliberate instrumentation for this work. Besides Charlie Newman lyrics in English and François Villon's antiquated French my original Galego Language Anthem "Vivo O Galego" debuts here.

I was at a Galego language rally in Santiago de Compostela touched by the story of the language of Galicia and rattled by the story of Franco, who was from Galicia, crushed it along with every non-Castilian language spoken in Spain. At the Cafe Norfolk that night I wrote the kernel of the song that became my first of many songs in Galego.
